Lamayru is a small easily accessible village situated at an altitude of 3510 meter on the Leh – Srinagar Highway around 125 km away from Leh. The Lamayuru monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh dating back to the 10th century, Legends believe that there existed a vast lake in Lamayuru which was dried up to lay the foundation of the village and the monastery. After the water dried up the land started to get moon-like craters and formations. Originally, the monastery had five buildings, though now only the central building exists. Zanskar valley is the most isolated of all the regions of Ladakh and well known as trekker’s paradise. The Zanskar mountain range covers an area of 7000 sq kms. and is situated at an elevation of 13,154 above sea level.Km. Zanskar Valley is known for its wide views and sceneries, cave monasteries and mostly travelled to for its trekking trails and river rafting experiences and the Suru Valley, the two valleys almost always visited together This valley is a part of Kargil district and the only Buddhist majority sub-region, which has otherwise about 85% Muslim population. The name ‘Zanskar’ refers to natural occurrence of Copper which is known as ‘Zangs’ in Tibetan. Padum is the only town in the valley where two rivers; Stod from north-west and Tsarap river from south-east meet to form Zanskar river which flows towards north to join the Indus at Nimmo. There are many small villages scattered in Zanskar region, some of the monasteries here are quite well known. But since many of the villages in the region are not linked by road, approach to these monasteries is only available on foot. Zanskar is famous for the Chaddar Trek, carried out in the winter. The Chadar trek is basically a difficult walk on a frozen river called the “Zanskar River” in the cold months. The frozen Zanskar River has served and still serves as the traditional and only way of connection between Leh and Zanskar. This valley is cut off from the rest of world for over 9 months of the year.
